The European Union will increase customs checks on goods shipped directly by ecommerce retailers like Temu and Shein to EU consumers as it seeks to ensure fair competition and product safety, according to a draft of an official communication seen by Reuters on Monday.

High number of "products that are unsafe, counterfeit or otherwise non-compliant leads to serious safety and health risks," the draft proposal said, per the FT.

Lawmakers in the European Parliament approved the AI Act in March last year after years of wrangling over the fine points. The Act came into force on August 1, but it’s only now that regulators have the power to clamp down on those who don’t comply.
