Republicans looking to get their sprawling tax and spending bill to President Trump’s desk by July 4 need to quickly resolve a series of longstanding fights over some of their most contentious proposals.

Senate Republicans voted to advance their massive tax and spending bill late Saturday night after hours of delays and negotiations.

Some GOP senators are keeping their cards close to their vest as to how they’ll vote on a sweeping package of President Trump’s tax priorities and changes for programs like Medicaid and SNAP, also known as the food stamps program.

Donald Trump’s latest GOP opponent tore into the president in a fiery floor speech Sunday night hours after announcing his decision not to seek re-election. Tillis has previously slammed proposed changes to Medicaid in the bill as “devastating” for his home state of North Carolina.

"It's not a hard choice, and I will not be seeking re-election," Sen. Thom Tillis announced. His announcement comes after he voted against advancing President Donald Trump's megabill. Trump has repeatedly criticized Tillis over his opposition to the sweeping tax package — and has threatened to explore primary challengers to the two-term senator.
