FIFA said the Club World Cup, billed as "The Best v The Best," would be merit-based. Then it gave a spot to Messi's Inter Miami before the playoffs even began.

Top clubs from across the globe will be facing off for the new-look Club World Cup from 15 June, with the likes of Lionel Messi, Erling Haaland and Cole Palmer set to compete.
