Illegal fireworks caused major disruption in Oakland on the Fourth of July, straining emergency responders and endangering residents.

As fireworks were set off in the region through the Fourth of July holiday weekend, several fires dotted the Bay Area into Friday night, though officials reported no fatalities and no life-threatening injuries.

As the Bay Area moves closer to the July 4th holiday, city leaders are preparing for the likely scenario of the skies above Oakland being filled with illegal fireworks.

An 8-year-old girl was fatally struck by illegal fireworks on July 4th, according to the Buena Park Police Department. Officers patrolling the 8000 block of Cornflower Circle Friday night saw several people frantically carry the child into a residence after multiple fireworks had detonated in the area.

A house fire was reported just before 12:20 p.m. in the 27000 block of Mandarin Avenue, according to the Hayward Police Department. Officers arrived to find a man suffering from injuries “consistent with a fireworks-related explosion,” police said.
