Israeli strikes overnight killed at least 85 Palestinians across Gaza, hitting multiple homes and killing men, women and children as they slept, according to local officials.

For Palestinians, the renewed strikes brought a sudden return to the carnage and terror of the 15-month-long war.

Israel launched a wave of airstrikes across the Gaza Strip early Tuesday, saying it was hitting Hamas targets in its heaviest assault in the territory since a ceasefire took effect in January. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he had ordered the strikes because of a lack of progress in ongoing talks to extend the ceasefire.
