A White House official told NBC News that Trump plans to expand his review of museums beyond the Smithsonian, which is based in Washington, D.C.

President Trump is reigniting a debate over how Americans speak about diversity after saying the Smithsonian museums focus on how bad the country is.

Presiden Trump said the Smithsonian museums are too fixated on "how bad slavery was" and other negative aspects of United States history.

Both the American history and air and space museums honor American innovation and achievement. The air and space museum’s most famous exhibits include the Wright Brothers’ airplane, the "Spirit of St. Louis," which Charles Lindbergh flew across the Atlantic, and relics from the many U.S. missions to the moon.

The president made the remarks in a social media post amid a White House review of Smithsonian museums and exhibits.

Historians and researchers are expressing “grave concern” about President Trump’s push to purge museums of information he dislikes.
