Chelsea and Aston Villa have been fined by Uefa for breaching the European governing body's financial rules. The two clubs could be prevented from registering new players for Uefa competitions for the forthcoming season unless they have a positive transfer balance by the end of the summer transfer window.

Chelsea, Aston Villa and Barcelona are among the clubs that have been heavily fined by UEFA, with the Blues to pay up to £78.5million. Enzo Maresca’s side are currently at the Club World Cup where they will take on Palmeiras in the quarter-finals in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Chelsea have been fined 31 million euros ($36.50 million) by UEFA for breaches of its financial rules, while Aston Villa, Barcelona and Olympique Lyonnais were also levied with large fines, UEFA announced on Friday.
