The Legal Insurrection Foundation’s Equal Protection Project says it is challenging the scholarships to protect "American born" students.

The Department of Education said it opened investigations into five universities to determine whether the schools were granting scholarships only for undocumented students as the Trump administration expands its immigration crackdown and efforts to overhaul US higher education.

The department said it was examining whether universities that provide financial help for children who arrived in the country as undocumented immigrants are discriminating against U.S. citizens.
