You can swim in the water in Bay St Louis, however the water is not clear. The barrier islands aka Mississippi Sound make all the beaches from Waveland MS to Gulf Shores AL not as clear as in places like Destin FL. However, you can take a ferry in Gulfport out to the barrier islands in which the waters are very blue and beach is lovely on the island facing away from the state shorelines.
